Sindex in General
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Invention & Design Exhibition (SINDEX) 2007
is back to stimulate the minds of the young to become creative inventors.
Sindex 2007 Organising Chairman, Jeyan Marimuttu, (speech)
said participation is limited to secondary school students, including Chinese independent schools, in Sabah.
"The biannual competition is being organised for the fifth time. It was first held in 1998, followed by the year 2000, 2002 and 2005.
"All of us in the main organising committee have decided to maintain the Sindex 2005 theme of '
"Creativity Towards Excellence' for this year's Sindex 2007.
"And the Grand Final Exhibition is scheduled for Aug 11 to 12 here and tentatively will be held at UMS. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman is expected to inaugurate at the closing and prize giving ceremony," he said. The Statewide project is undertaken with the initiative of the Science and Technology Unit (UST) of the Chief Minister's Department but jointly organised by all Rotary Clubs of Sabah with cooperation from various institutions, both governmental and non-governmental, including Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Shell Malaysia, SIRIM Berhad, State Education Department, MINDS, Malaysia Architects Association (PAM) of Sabah branch, and Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) of Sabah branch.
The Rotary Club of Kota Kinabalu was appointed to lead the organisation of Sindex 2007 and it is also supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Environment and Culture, Ministry of Industrial Development, KKIP Communication Sdn Bhd, and Sri Komputer Sdn Bhd.
He said the main objective of Sindex 2007 is to support and encourage the society, particularly the younger generation, to be more creative and innovative.
"Due to limited resources, Sindex 2007 focuses on the secondary students with the aim to motivate and inspire them to be more creative, innovative and inventive especially in the field of science and technology.
"Such competition will also better prepare them to face the challenge of the national goal 'Vision 2020'," he said.
In terms of funding, Jeyan disclosed that the State Government, through its Ministry of Finance, is channelling a higher allocation of RM120,000 compared to previously to sponsor the competition.
At the same time, he said, Shell Malaysia had agreed to sponsor the prizes for the Young Inventors Award, which is in the region of RM30,000 and it has expressed its intention to be involved in the project in a substantial way.
"The Sindex 2007 event was officially launched at Dewan Tun Said in Kota Belud on March 12 and participated by nine schools with 200 students from the district and Tempasuk.
"The purpose of the launching is to inform schools and public especially students to be ready with their inventions for the Sindex this year, including to create awareness among the younger generation in the rural areas in particular," he said.
The event last month was launched by Hajjah Maimunah Suhaibul, on behalf of Sabah Education Director Normah Gagoh.
Jeyan said the launching also marked the beginning of motivation talks in schools organised by Rotarians throughout the State.
On why Kota Belud was picked as the launching venue, he replied that they had purposely selected the schools in the hope that they would be able to reach out to as many rural schools as possible.
"Big activities are often held in the cities and we felt that it is time to have the launching of the event at schools outside of the State capital.
"With the launching in Kota Belud, I am sure that the competition can motivate and inspire some of the students to be winners and grab the top Award," he said.
In Jeyan's welcoming address, he emphasised that Sindex is not merely an exhibition of the inventions by the students, judging or about winning the Young Inventor Award.
"Sindex is not only about exhibiting the students' creative inventions and to win the top award but a programme designed to create awareness among the young people of the 'power of the mind' and give them the right opportunity to explore the extent of that power each of them has within themselves.
"We, as organisers can only facilitate and create that opportunity for them. It is all up to you (students) to seize the opportunity and use that 'power of the mind' to be creative in producing innovative inventions," he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah Education Director Normah Gagoh said it is vital to master knowledge in science and technology, as both are prerequisites for a nation to be a developed country.
"Competitiveness in our country today and the future relies so much on the quality of products and this is where innovation and inventions come into play. At the same time, competitiveness of the nation also lies with the young generation as they play important roles.
"Hence, we encourage and give full support to the Sindex competition which is an activity under Science & Technology Promotion Programme (PPST)," she said.
She hoped Sindex would be able to unearth new talents among the students and inculcate the culture of creating and developing creative, innovative and inventive minds through problem solving that is orientated towards designing and inventions.
